The world map prepared by Piri Reis in 1513 reached its 500th year in 2013. UNESCO declared the year in his name, recognizing his contributions to maritime knowledge. Çınar Rugs honored the occasion with a silk rug, weaving the famous map into a piece of art.
Lesbos and Ayvalık’s coastlines, drawn centuries ago, found their way into silk. The knots mirrored the original map, paying tribute to the precision of Ottoman cartography. Every detail captured the nature of Piri Reis’ work, adhering to his ability to navigate and record coastlines with superior correctness.
Piri Reis dedicated his life to the sea. His Kitab-ı Bahriye became the most detailed maritime guide of its time. Ottoman sailors relied on its pages to navigate unknown waters, trusting the notes and charts drawn by a man who had spent years mastering the Mediterranean. He combined personal knowledge with records gathered from sailors, which led to remarkable accuracy.

Ibrahim Pasha, a grand vizier known for his influence in Ottoman politics, recognized the value of Piri Reis’ work. He urged him to refine Kitab-ı Bahriye, expand its scope, and present it to Sultan Suleiman. The revised edition, completed in 1526, cemented Piri Reis’ historical place. His work became a legacy.
Çınar Rugs carries a similar passion for the finest detail in every woven piece. Every knot depicts a tradition that has been brought along through decades. The Piri Reis artwork proves this tradition, guaranteeing his name will be forever etched in history.
